[Before I say anything, I actually wrote this in my status update, but the topic is very important to me, and I wouldn't want it to disappear as I put up more pictures. It's something I hope a lot of other people, artists or not, can come across and feel accepted and worthy, and possibly be motivated to do the things they love even more. I hope that it can help someone feel better about themselves and/or their art, even if it's just a little bit.]
I appreciate every favorite and every comment and every watch everyone has given me.
To some fellow artists out there, I know a lot of us (i.e. me) just really wants more comments, more watchers, and more favorites, because sometimes these are the things on the internet that makes it feel as if our art is anything worth looking at. Often I wonder why I have any watchers at all. It's as if we need someone else's approval to be able to feel any good about the things we put up here. And sometimes, we get upset when we don't get as many favorites, comments, or watchers as we want or expect, because it can leave you feeling a little bad about yourself.
But don't worry, because you're still valuable and worthy as a person and an artist! I feel as if social media websites such as tumblr, deviantart, Instagram, or whatever has instilled this ideology into us that tells us the more likes/comments/watchers you have, the "cooler" you are. A lot of us start thinking that we have to be popular in order to feel "worthy" of the eyes of thousands of strangers on the internet. But you should't depend on the number of likes or comments or watchers in order to feel as if you're a "good" artist. And it's fine to feel upset! It's okay to feel bad.
Take a deep breath. Maybe drink some water. Hang out with some friends. Eat a snack, do something you enjoy--drawing, painting, playing video games, etc. Tell yourself that no matter how many comments, likes, watchers you have, these numbers don't determine your worth as an artist or a person, because you're already worth so much and you're already so valuable as a person! There is no such thing as "cool", because everyone is a weirdo in their own way. The fact that you're alive is beautiful! Everyone is important no matter what, and we're all going through a conflict of our own. To artists out there who are brave enough to put something on the internet, you're doing wonderful! No matter what, each piece you put out there is building up to something much greater; each piece is a piece of you, so be proud! You're doing something that requires effort and passion! Constructive criticism is important for you because often it can help provide a hint or a guide that you can use as a basis to start practicing and improving, but it's not constructive criticism if it's attacking your art or you in a way that doesn't help you improve at all. Be proud of who you are, be proud of the pieces you make, and be proud when you practice, practice, practice! And if you're not passionate about art in general, that's fine! If art isn't something you're invested in, that's okay! Maybe find something that you can be invested in, discover parts of yourself you didn't know about! The fact that everyone is an individual living being is beautiful.
You can't control the number of likes, comments, watchers you'll get, but that's okay, because they shouldn't be the things to tell you how "good" or "cool" you are. The coolest thing to do is to do what you love most.
